The Power of Gratitude

In this life we are all guaranteed to experience suffering and difficulty at many points along our journeys. In Christ, however, we are promised a better way to walk through those heartaches. The Bible gives us a blueprint for how this is possible. The antidote to heartache is often a thankful heart, believe it or not. Colossians 3:16-17 says,

“Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” (emphasis added)

In the original text (the Bible is literally older than English), the Greek word for thankfulness is χάρις – Charis, which is a word for grace—joy, pleasure, and delight, of goodwill and favor.

Summed up, thankfulness is a way of being. We can live with gratitude for God’s goodness and grace at work in our lives. As you begin to notice God and His grace in your life, you’ll be able to live with a powerful ability to overcome challenges with gratefulness. Jesus gives us an ability to shift our heartache to appreciation long enough to experience some relief. Then, over time, the stings of this difficult life, well, they sting less and less.

The God of the universe knows how life works. Would you like to know Him? He’s wants a relationship with you—that’s what the Bible really is about. It all comes to a point with Jesus Christ. John 3:16 pulls it all together beautifully, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will never perish but have eternal life.” Life starts with Jesus and lasts forever. Would you like this life? Talk to God, and we’d love to help you see Him and know Him!
